Kayode Abiodun and Ajani Ibrahim both scored in the second half as the side currently in 2nd spot in the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) produced a big performance to aid their cause. In truth, it was a game Sunshine dominated from start to finish and an 8-0 score line would have been a fairer reflection of the game.
However, profligacy by the Sunshine strikers coupled with the amazing reflexes of Tiko’s keeper, Idrissou Oumarou meant the first half ended scoreless.
The home side began the second half like a house on fire and deservedly got their reward seconds after the restart as Kayode Abiodun showed presence of thought to stab home from 10 yards.
Sunshine continued to dominate but chances came and went with alarming regularity without any tangible results to show for it.
It looked like it would end up as one of those days for Sunshine as Tiko, seeming content to lose 1-0, dedicated their resources on defensive duties.
It turned out to be a hazardous tactic as top marksman, Ajani Ibrahim, who had missed chance after chance all evening, arrived at the back post to head in a pin-point Ofem Inah cross into the net.
Sunshine almost made it 3-0 at the death but Ajani’s cut back to Dayo Ojo was wasted by the striker.
“We deserved to win and I am sure we will win again in Cameroun,” Coach of Sunshine Stars, Gbenga Ogunbote told SuperSport.com after the game.
President of Tiko, Leotex Leonard was livid.
“The officiating was terrible and with better officiating, we would have gotten a better result,” he stressed. The second leg comes up in a forth night in the Camerounian city of Douala.
