Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has undergone surgery on his groin and will be out for up to four weeks.
"The decision was made following consultation with a specialist," a club statement read on Friday. The England midfielder was not part of the Reds squad which travelled to Braga for Thursday's Europa League defeat.
If he is out for a month, Gerrard will not feature for England in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on 26 March or the friendly against Ghana.
Gerrard suffered the injury in the 1-0 win against Chelsea on 6 February at Stamford Bridge.
The news will be frustrating for manager Kenny Dalglish who will be without his 30-year-old skipper for at least three Premier League matches.
This includes away fixtures against Sunderland and West Brom, followed by a home match with Manchester City on 11 April.
Dalglish's best-case scenario will have Gerrard available for the season's remaining six league games.
Liverpool, currently in sixth spot in the table with nine matches left, also face a tough task to make the quarter-finals in the Europa League.
The Reds have to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they play Braga in the second leg at Anfield next Thursday.
Gerrard was forced to sit out five games for his club at the end of last year after tearing a hamstring during England's 2-1 defeat at home to France in November.
