Taiwo, 25, has been outstanding in the French League this season and has also been targeted by Everton.
The Nigerian international is currently valued at £5m and is keen to show he can compete at the highest level.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has already made a move for Everton winger Steven Pienaar and is now hoping to follow that up with the signing of Taiwo.
Reports in Portugal suggest that Benfica have already held talks with Marseille and that Tottenham have now opened negotiations over a possible transfer.
